Tri-State Rule Change Proposal - 2006

Tri-State Championship Rules

Tri-State Championship Rules - 1990

by Ken Frey

These rules were voted upon by all three Councils involved of NY, NJ and CT in 1990 as the rules that we would conduct the Tri-State Championship.

  1. Each team is made up of thirty members. Twenty-five of those members count for points toward the trophy. Five drivers are Alternates that cannot earn points, but can displace other drivers from getting points. The lists of drivers and their respective classes in which they will drive must be exchanged at the Driver.s Meeting before the event starts.
  2. The point schedule for the twenty-five drivers that count for the competition is 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1.
  3. The SCCA Championship rules of one car makes a class with no bumping and only three competitive runs count are used.
  4. A car can only compete in one class division. It cannot compete in a Stock division and also compete in a Street Prepared or any other division.
  5. There are four Ladies classes of Stock, Street Prepared, Prepared and Modified. The Ladies classes are PAXed within those four divisions.
  6. The hosting of the event rotates from Council to Council each year.

Proposed revision of the Tri-State Championship rules

Proposed revision of the Tri-State Championship rules
By Rich Wayne, NYR-SCCA. Draft #1 9/22/2006

Due to the growing number of SCCA classes, building a competitive team for the Tri-State Championship has become more a matter of creative car classing and less a measure of driving talent. The current class count stands at 34 open classes and 4 ladies classes. Having a full team of 30 drivers is the most important aspect of forming a team. In order to change this, the following points system has been suggested:

The proposed points systems is as follows:

6 Classes:

1) Stock : SS,AS,BS,CS,DS,ES,FS,GS,HS grouped together and PAX'ed
2) SP: ASP,BSP,CSP,DSP,ESP,FSP,SM,SM2 also grouped and PAX'ed
3) P: AP,BP,CP,DP,EP,FP,XP also grouped and PAX'ed
4) Mod AM,BM,CM,DM,EM,FM also grouped and PAX'ed
5) Ladies (all classes) PAX'ed
6) Street Tire STS2,STS,STX,STU PAX'ed

each class scored 9,6,4,3,2,1 (this is the old points system)

No car can have more than two drivers.

No car can compete in more than one class, with the exception of a car running ladies and the same open class.

25 drivers driving for points and up to 5 drivers for bumping. Drivers must be regular competitors in the region they are competing in. (no recruiting drivers from other regions for this one event.) It was suggested that perhaps a driver in question may need to submit results from the current year for at least two events.

Here are some more reasons I think this points system works:

Having a full team is NOT essential to win. A team can win with as few as 12 drivers. With only six classes, six first place and six third place finishes would net enough points to win overall.

With the (old) current rules, every year the hosting region will win for certain.

Also, the hosting region can afford to splurge for really nice trophies for the winning drivers. Purchase just 18 trophies, enough for 1st through 3rd in each class and be done.

Poll on accepting Draft #1

This is an informal poll on accepting draft #1 as the 2006 and future Tri-State rule set.

Do you think that this rule set is acceptable?
